UNIVERSAL FITMENT: Universal fuel tanks are NOT designed as a direct replacement for a specific motorcycle model. Installation may require modifications or additional mounting hardware. Fitment is not guaranteed for any specific make or model. It is the purchaser's responsibility to confirm dimensions, mounting requirements, and suitability for their intended application before ordering.
Universal fuel tanks are final sale and are not eligible for cancellation, return, or exchange once ordered. Manufacturer warranty coverage for defects or breakage still applies in accordance with Clarke's warranty terms, however considering the definition of Universal, as described below, this is subject to approval by the manufacturer and MX1 Canada.
This is Clarke’s pre-1983 vintage universal off-road fuel tank — MX1 Canada Part# 301362 (Clarke #11362). It is designed to accommodate a range of vintage motorcycles and project builds, rather than serve as a direct replacement for one specific model.
It should not be confused with the model-specific Clarke SFHO tank — MX1 Canada Part# 30SFHO — which is designed for the Honda XL250 (1971–1975).
The following fitment information and technical notes explain the differences between these two tanks.
Universal Fitment — This Tank: For a later-generation XL250 or a vintage project build, this tank’s wide mounting tunnel allows it to be adapted to the following applications:
- Honda: XL250 / XL500 (1976–1981), XR250 / XR500, XR350, XL350, MT250 and MR175
- Yamaha: DT175, DT250, DT400 and TT500
- Suzuki: PE250, PE400, SP400, SP500, DR370, DR500, DS185, TS185, RM400 and RM465
- Vintage Euro / Other: Bultaco, Hodaka and TM250 / TM400
Universal fitment does not mean a guaranteed direct bolt-on installation. Mounting adjustments or additional hardware may be required. Please contact us BEFORE ordering if you have any questions about your motorcycle’s specific year, model or mounting requirements.
Model-Specific Alternative — Honda XL250 (1971–1975): If you require a direct bolt-on replacement for the original frame and mounting arrangement, see MX1 Canada Part# 30SFHO. That tank is molded with specific tunnel contours to match the Honda XL250 (1971–1975) factory frame layout.
Essential Technical & Installation Notes:
Mounting Differences: This universal tank (MX1 Canada Part# 301362) has a 2.75-inch-wide mounting tunnel and includes a universal bracket kit, spacers and mounting hardware for adapting it to non-standard frame backbones.
The SFHO tank (MX1 Canada Part# 30SFHO) mounts at the front like the stock Honda XL250 (1971–1975) metal tank, sliding over the factory front rubber puck frame mounts.
Petcock Configurations: This universal tank has dual fuel outlets, one on each side, allowing flexible fuel-line routing around different carburetor and exhaust configurations. It includes one Clarke-style grooved petcock and block-off hardware for the unused outlet.
The SFHO tank has a single fuel outlet and includes a Clarke-style grooved petcock.
Fuel Capacity: This universal tank holds 10.2 litres / 2.7 US gallons. The SFHO tank holds slightly more, at 11.4 litres / 3 US gallons.
Cosmetic Surface Blemishes: Clarke manufactures these tanks from heavy-duty, high-impact, cross-linked polyethylene. The manufacturer notes that minor surface bubbles may form during the plastic curing process. These blemishes are cosmetic and do not affect structural integrity.
Manufacturing Shavings Warning: Thoroughly rinse and dry any new Clarke tank before installation, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Small plastic shavings from the drilling and molding process can remain inside the tank and may clog the petcock or restrict fuel flow.
MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY: Clarke offers a 30 day guarantee against defects and 1 year against breakage. Clarke reserves the right to refuse to replace tanks that have failed due to improper maintenance, incorrect mounting, modifications, or fittings installed that were not originally supplied with the tank. If you have purchased the tank through MX1 Canada please email us with your order number and a description of the issue. We will contact Clarke on your behalf to initiate a warranty claim. You can reach us via the Order Confirmation email that was sent to you when the order was placed, or through our Contact Us page here: https://www.mx1canada.com/help.php?section=contactus
CANCELLATION POLICY: Clarke fuel tanks are made to order and lead times can vary depending on the time of year. Typically Spring/Summer months may take slightly longer than the estimated lead time provided in the product description. If you wish to cancel an order that is in production there will be a 5% cancellation fee deducted. In the event the fuel tank is already in transit to our warehouse, the cancellation fee is 15%.
