Fitting a Seat Concepts foam and cover kit means rebuilding the seat on your existing OEM pan. This MX1 Canada guide walks you through the main stages. Read any instructions supplied with your kit before starting.
Tools and materials
- 20-gauge pneumatic staple gun.
- Stainless steel staples with a 1/2-inch crown and 1/4-inch leg. Seat Concepts specifies a 5/16-inch leg only where thicker material prevents the shorter staple from securing properly.
- Flathead screwdriver and needle-nose pliers.
- Spray adhesive suitable for the foam and seat pan.
- Scissors for trimming excess cover material.
Installation steps
1. Prepare the seat pan
Remove the seat from the motorcycle. Lift out the old staples, then remove the cover and foam. Clear away residue and inspect the pan for damage before fitting the new kit.
2. Position the new foam
Check how the replacement foam sits on the pan. Secure it using suitable spray adhesive, following the adhesive's application and drying directions.
3. Warm and align the cover
A gently warmed cover is easier to fit. Use a sunny location or a heat lamp, keeping the material warm rather than hot. Centre the cover and check its position before stapling.
4. Anchor the cover
Use a few staples at the front and rear to hold the cover in position. Secure it around changes in the pan's shape, then work through one section at a time.
5. Smooth and secure
Work wrinkles towards the pan's edge and adjust the stapling position as needed. Removing and replacing a few staples is normal when refining the fit.
6. Finish and refit
Check the cover around the entire pan. Trim excess material where necessary, then refit the seat and check its mounting.
